I teach Children’s Church once a month, and these kids in grades 3-5 come up with some awesome thoughts and questions.
A recent discussion revolved around how we are to be faithful followers of Christ, and this idea stayed with me long after the class was over:
If I’m to be a faithful follower, then I need to spend time with people who also want to be faithful followers.
But my schedule is full. But Sunday mornings are my time off from work. But I don’t really know people. But I read the Bible every day, so why do I need to gather with other people? (Yes, you’ve just entered my mind.)
Why does it matter?
Because it’s God’s intention for us to gather. We were created to gather.
Gather to testify and encourage. “And when they arrived and gathered the church together, they declared all that God had done with them, and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.” Acts 14:27 ESV
Gather to learn and be encouraged. “So when they were sent off, they went down to Antioch, and having gathered the congregation together, they delivered the letter. And when they had read it, they rejoiced because of its encouragement.” Acts 15:30-31 ESV
Gather to build each other up in our faith. “What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.” 1 Corinthians 14:26 ESV
Gather to encourage others. “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as it is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:24-25 ESV
Gather to celebrate. “And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’” (Read the parables for context)
Gather to glorify God. “May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our lord Jesus Christ. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.” Romans 15:5-7 ESV
No matter why we gather, whether for a service, a project, a meal, or a celebration, God designed us to gather and not do life alone. Join me in being intentional about making opportunities to gather.
P.S. Did you notice encouragement coming up multiple times? Something to think about 🙂
