Choices and Actions

“Then David received from her hand what she had brought him. And he said to her, ‘Go up in peace to your house. See, I have obeyed your voice, and I have granted your petition.’” 1 Samuel 25:35 ESV

Abigail was a woman of action. She acted to save her family without hesitation, despite being in a familial situation that was anything but idyllic.

To better understand Abigail, we need to understand the character of her husband.

She was married to Nabal: “The woman was discerning and beautiful, but the man was harsh and badly behaved: he was a Calebite” (1 Samuel 25:3b ESV). This was likely an arranged marriage, not of her choosing. Yet being married to a such a wealthy man would have provided her with security.

That is, until it didn’t.

More backstory: David protected Nabal’s shepherds while they were tending to Nabal’s herds,  so David asked for provisions for himself and his men. Seems like a reasonable request. We protected your men, and we’re hungry, so please give us some food.

But Nabal said no. And David got mad. In fact, David threatened to destroy everything.

A servant immediately tells Abigail what her husband did and the impending repercussions of this decision (vs 14-17).

And Abigail made a choice. She found herself in a situation she didn’t choose, but she had a choice of how to handle herself in that situation. She chose to protect those she was responsible for.

She chose to act.

She acted to protect her family. She gathered food and sent it to David and his men (vs 18-20). She took the guilt for her husband’s actions (24). She was honest and didn’t try to change David’s opinion of her husband (25a). She asked for forgiveness (28).

She acted to change David’s mind. “And David said to Abigail, ‘Blessed be the Lord, and God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! Blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you, who have kept me this day from bloodguilt and from working salvation with my own hand!’” (32-33).

She acted discreetly and waited to tell Nabal about her choice (36-37). Ironically, Nabal was busy giving a feast fit for a king, but Nabal didn’t want to give David anything. His selfishness nearly destroyed his family.

She acted and was used by God to prevent David from wrongdoing: “When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Blessed be the Lord who has avenged the insult I received at the hand of Nabal, and has kept back his servant from wrongdoing’” (39a).

Yes, Nabal died, and his family and workers were saved by Abigail’s choices and actions. She got the job done and was rewarded: David took her as his wife, and her marriage to David gave her protection and security in a culture where she needed both.

What choices have you made recently that resulted in immediate action? When have you stepped out in faith, trusting God with the next step?
