Grateful for Change

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” – Psalm 51:10 (ESV)

I never thought I’d say this, but I’m grateful for change. Not all changes, but certainly the changes God has made in my heart, and consequently in my life. Sometimes I think back to who I was before adulting, back at the beginning of my teaching career. I was happy and content. And then, over time, I became tainted, pulled into myself, unhappy, and discontented.

But God changed my heart, and I’m grateful that He helped me recognize that life is made up of different seasons, some great and some not so great.

Our God is so powerful that He can change anything He wants to.

He changes hearts: “For at that time I will change the speech of the peoples to a pure speech, that all of them may call upon the name of the Lord and serve him with one accord” (Zephaniah 3:9).

He changes circumstances: “Behold, at that time I will deal with all your oppressors. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth” (Zephaniah 3:19).

He changes lives: “He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding” (Daniel 2:21). We see these changes in the lives of Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10) and Saul (Acts 9), two men who put aside their former ways after encountering Jesus.

Knowing that God has the power to change us, we can embrace change:

A change of perspective: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:23).

A change of season: “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven” Ecclesiastes 3:1).

Remembering that although we change, there’s someone who doesn’t change.

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (James 1:17).

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).
