Seeing & Believing

Sometimes it’s hard to believe based on what we see.

It can be difficult to reconcile what we experience with what we know in our minds should be true.

“So Jesus said to him, ‘Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe’” (John 4:48 ESV).

But Jesus did show signs, and those who saw still didn’t believe.

The day after seeing him walk on water, Jesus’ disciples asked him what signs he would give them so they could believe (John 6:30). Did they already forget seeing him walk on water the night before?

They saw the miracles, and yet they mocked him (Mark 15:32). They heard his promise of resurrection, and yet they doubted him (Matthew 28:16-17John 20:25). When Mary told the disciples she saw the risen Christ, they did not believe her: “But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it” (Mark 16:11 ESV).

And Jesus knew. “But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe” (John 6:36 ESV).

What do I seeing but not believe?

Because we do see evidence of our belief – evidence that God exists and his Biblical promises are true.

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” Psalm 19:1 ESV

And that evidence reinforces our faith, drawing us to believe.

“And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” Hebrews 11:6 ESV

“Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory.” 1 Peter 1:8 ESV

So, look and see. Don’t assume that because Jesus isn’t walking toward you on water that He isn’t doing miracles. Look and see. And listen. Someone else may be seeing something that strengthens your believing. Look and see.

Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe  if told.” Habakkuk 1:5 ESV
