Philippians 4:11 ESV “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned, in whatever situation I am, to be content.”
I crave contentment. Life is busy, and sometimes I feel like it’s passing me by, and I haven’t had the chance to enjoy it. Lately I’ve found that gratitude leads me to contentment, especially gratitude for simple things: beautiful weather, time to rest, good classes at work, texting with a friend.
Feeling gratitude for simple things leads me to contentment because these simple things occur consistently, keeping me in a regular habit of being grateful. When I put gas in my car, I’m thankful I have both a car that runs and the money to buy gas. When I get groceries, I’m thankful that food is readily available and I can pay for it. When I clean up leaves, I’m thankful that I have a yard with healthy trees. Just as Paul writes in 1 Timothy 6:6-8, “But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.”
Regular gratitude prepares me for when contentment is hard to find amidst undesirable circumstances: “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned, in whatever situation I am, to be content” (Philippians 4:11 ESV). It fills the empty space in my mind when negative thoughts creep in, filling my thoughts with how God provides in ways both big and small.
I’ve also found that finding regular gratitude in simple things helps to reduce my anxious thoughts:
Finding gratitude in simple things makes me be present.
If I’m present, I’m not worrying about the future (being anxious).
If I’m not anxious, I can feel content.
Philippians 4:6 ESV says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God.” Don’t miss this: Thanksgiving, along with prayer and supplication, eases anxious thoughts.
So, let’s show gratitude for the simple things: people we interact with, moments we find ourselves in, blessings we discover, and a God who provides all we need to be content in Him.
