How Much More

I have a habit of underlining words or phrases that occur in different parts of Scripture. One such phrase is how much more

And as I read this phrase in context, I’m reminded of the simplicity found in these words: God loves me.

Jesus used this phrase repeatedly to show just how much God values us.

It was common in Jewish culture to make an argument by going from the lesser thing to the greater. Think of those SAT if/then statements: if the first part of the idea is true, then the second must also be true. Jesus started with relatable ideas and then went beyond the obviously observable to describe God’s presence in our lives.

  • “If you, then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” Matthew 7:11 ESV
  • “He said to them, ‘Which one of you who has a sheep, if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” Matthew 12:11-12 ESV
  • “Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse or barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!” Luke 12:24 ESV
  • “But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith!” Luke 12:28 ESV
  • “For is the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.” Hebrews 9:13-14 ESV

Sometimes when I’m feeling overwhelmed, I try to find perspective by considering where how much more is evident in God’s creation. The birds have food and shelter, even without bird feeders and bird houses. Trees survive heat, snow, and storms.

I’m not claiming that remembering this statement will make life easier, but it will make it more exciting, filled with greater anticipation of what God will do. How does this happen? I must stop trying to fully understand God and trust Him simply.

Where can you observe how much more when you need perspective?
