“For the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.” Isaiah 12:2 ESV
I was recently asked to give my testimony to a kids’ club at my church (what an honor!). It was interview-style, and I was asked to choose three words to describe who Jesus is to me. What a thought-provoking question! But what was cool was that because I was talking with kids, I had to keep my answer simple and succinct. So, I chose three words that were meaningful for me, but could also be relatable to kids. Of course, I paired each word with a Bible verse, because kids need to know where truth comes from! Here’s what I came up with:
1. Protector – Ephesians 6:10-18 ESV
These verses describe the Armor of God that He gives us to protect us from the schemes of the devil (click here for more on this topic!).
We also see that God is our protector in Psalm 121: “My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.” (Click here to read all of Psalm 121 – it’s one of my go-to chapters.)
2. Strength – Isaiah 12:2 ESV: “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.”
My mom wrote this scripture reference in the front of a Bible she gave me, and I’ve had it memorized ever since. I love what it tells me – God is my salvation, so I will trust. God is my salvation, so I will not be afraid. God is my strength. God is my song (as a singer, I love this one!).
3. Hope – Psalm 42:5-6 ESV: “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”
Here the Psalmist begins with a valuable question: What’s going on with me? Why am I feeling __________ (insert your own word: sad, tired, weary, depressed, etc.)? And the response comes immediately, very directly and succinctly: Hope in God.
What are your three words to describe who Jesus is in your life?
