“Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation – if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.” (1 Peter 2:2-3, ESV)
I accepted Christ as a child, but that acceptance had a bigger impact on my life when I was older and started making my own decisions. While in high school, and even more so in college, there was a change in my life where I didn’t just go to church on Sundays. I wanted a relationship with Christ that lasted all week.
As a middle school teacher, I’m always telling my students that learning is growth over time. We might understand a concept right away, but it becomes part of us over time. It takes time and experience for something to be learned.
My experience as a follower of Christ shapes my identity in Christ today. I started reading my Bible each morning in college, and that’s still the first thing I do in the morning. It’s the perfect way to start the day, focusing on who I am in Christ before the busyness of the day begins (and I need to interact with people!).
Christ is my foundation in all things – decisions, thoughts, and actions – and I know from experience that He grants wisdom and peace when I seek His direction. Now here’s the thing: not everyone I encounter “gets” this about me. And that can be tricky sometimes, but if my identity is in Christ, then I can be confident with the choices I make and actions I take.
And I love how my experience in Christ grounds me when change happens. I’m still a child of God, and that will never change, no matter the circumstances. As Peter writes: “if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good” (1 Peter 2:3), I have tasted that the Lord is good, I have experienced His love and mercy toward me, and I have chosen to proudly identify myself as a believer in Christ.
