Ah, Anxiety

“. . .casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 7 ESV

Recently I’ve found my jaw clenched, neck locked up, and right shoulder tense. It must be August, when I finally look at my work calendar to see when school begins. It’s when my mind starts racing with all of the things I need to take care of, even as I mourn the coming end of summer and freedom.

That’s right, I said mourn.

So, as I feel my anxiousness increase, I am reminded of what the Bible says about being anxious.

  • “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?” Psalm 56:3-4 ESV
  • “The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:5-7 ESV
  • “. . .casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 7 ESV
  • “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!” Psalm 139:23 ESV
  • When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.” Psalm 94:19 ESV

So if all these verses are true, then why am I anxious?

Because I’m human.

Because I’m not in control.

Because I’m afraid.

And because the devil is playing with my emotions.

But I believe God has the best planned for me. He has never left me, nor forsaken me, so why am I so riddled with anxiety? Enough!

God, You have proven Yourself time and time again as my Father, my Protector, my Savior. In the name of Jesus I proclaim you as King over my life, and I place my anxious thoughts at Your feet, where You willingly accept them. You love me, You are loving me, I have no reason to doubt You and Your love for me, and I proclaim You as in control. In the name of Jesus I place my need for control at the foot of Your throne and leave it there. You are God alone, You can do anything but fail. You are in control even when the devil attacks my places of weakness. Please keep me healthy – physically, mentally, and spiritually, Lord. Amen.

What are you anxious about in this moment? What scripture will you memorize to have with you when moments of anxiety arise?

“. . .casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 7 ESV

Such a great reminder! As a child I learned a Psalty the Singing Songbook song about casting our cares on God. It still comes to mind when my mind is overwhelmed.
