A Simple Purpose

“I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.” Psalm 57:2 ESV

But what is His purpose for me?

Anyone else overthink this like me, waiting for some big revelation about what I should be doing in life? (Still waiting on that text from God. . . ) I spent way too many days in my classroom this year wondering what my purpose is, other than feeling like a glorified babysitter.

But it’s really simpler than that. How do we grasp the simplicity?

Recognize that God DOES have a purpose for His children.

“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.” Psalm 138:8 ESV

“The Lord has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble.” Proverbs 16:4 ESV

“Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” Psalm 139:16 ESV

Recognize that God’s purpose prevails.

“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” Proverbs 19:21 ESV

“For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.” Psalm 56:13 ESV

Recognize that our purpose is simple: To worship God.

Through thanksgiving: “For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” Romans 1:21 ESV

Through testimony

  • “For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.” Psalm 73:27-28 ESV
  • “I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the Lord.” Psalm 118:17 ESV
  • “But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.” 2 Corinthians 2:14 ESV
  • “But I do not account my life of any value not as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” Acts 20:24 ESV

In a world where more is really just more, let’s keep it simple. Because our God doesn’t complicate His purpose for us (He knows we can’t handle complicated!). So, let’s renew our purpose every morning, rejoice in it every night, and be thankful for the opportunities God gives us to live out His purpose.
