The word “noel” does not appear in the Bible. However, it’s meaning permeates the Christmas story. According to Crosswalk.com:

  • The French nouvelles means “news”
  • The English nowel means “shout of joy”
  • The Latin natalis means “birth”

So when we sing “noel”, we’re shouting for joy about the news of Christ’s birth.

How do we prepare ourselves to proclaim “Noel”?

Know who the main character of Christmas is. . .

“There before the world began”

Pause and think about this – Christmas was the birth of Jesus in human form, but not as the Son of God (John 17:5 ESVJohn 17:24 ESV). Jesus, who was God before the creation of the world, has no heavenly birthday – He is eternal.

“Born to suffer, born to save”

This was His purpose, because it was God the Father’s purpose (John 12:27-33 ESV), and Jesus’ purpose was to fulfill the purpose of His Father (John 6:40 ESVJohn 15:28-31 ESV). And if He hadn’t been born as a human man, we would not be able to even approach God, because the New Covenant wouldn’t exist (Hebrews 9:15 ESV).

“Given for us”

Jesus left Heaven to die (John 12:27 ESV) to save us from our sin (John 3:16) because He loves us (John 13:1 ESV).

. . . and respond.

“COME and SEE what God has done”

“Come” – I need to move, to approach God, to accept His invitation to move closer to Him (Luke 6:47-48 ESV)

“See”  – I need to be aware, to be observant, to look for God in the everyday things

How will you proclaim “Noel” during this Christmas season?

“And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” Luke 2:10 ESV
